چکیده

Miniature unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicles have become popular due to their compact size, high maneuverability and high payload-to-size ratio. Such vehicles have shown great potential in surveillance and search and rescue; however the “onthe-ground” processing methods implemented are rather insufficient. This paper presents a low cost, high powered onboard vision system for small VTOL vehicles; it differs from existing ones because it utilizes an inexpensive and highly developed ATX board as opposed to expensive PC-104 boards used by other systems. The physical configuration of the system, necessary drivers, and field tested results are also presented.

Improving Endurance and Range of a UGV with Gimballed Landing Platform for Launching Small Unmanned Helicopters

Design specifications for a high-endurance and range unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) with a gimballed landing platform on top of it for takeoff/landing, transporting to the target area and recharging of small/miniature unmanned helicopters are presented and justified. Specification constraints include UGV strict payload limitations, limited free space affecting power supply availability that impa...

Control and Estimation Algorithms for the Stabilization of VTOL UAVs from Mono-Camera Measurements

DOI : 10.12762/2014.AL08-07 Control and Estimation Algorithms for the Stabilization of VTOL UAVs from Mono-Camera Measurements This paper concerns the control of Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) based on exteroceptive measurements obtained from a mono-camera vision system. By assuming the existence of a locally planar structure in the field of view of the UAV...

Design Methodology of a Hybrid Propulsion Driven Electric Powered Miniature Tailsitter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Contrary to the manned tailsitter aircraft concepts, which have been shelved and forgotten after mid 1960’s, the unmanned versions of these concepts have become popular. Since, tailsitter type UAVs combine both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) operation and relatively high speed cruise flight capabilities which provide manifest advantages over the other VTOL aircraft concepts, including heli...

Design, construction and modelling of a low cost, miniature UAV using machine vision

The price barrier for the implementation of UAVs commercially is substantial, limiting growth in this area. This paper presents results from a project aimed at developing light-weight and low-cost systems for the on-board control of a small scale commercially available helicopter, targeted at the low-end of the market. This would allow UAVs to be used by relatively untrained operators. The cont...

In-Trim Flight Investigations of a Conceptual Fluidic Thrust-Vectored Unmanned Tail-Sitter Aircraft

The feasibility of using a stand alone Fluidic Thrust-Vectoring (FTV) system for the purpose of longitudinal trim of an unmanned aerial vehicle is the focus of the research presented in this paper. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires high pressure secondary air to deflect the engine exhaust gases, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable sec...
